A Tall Tale

I am a tall girl; six feet tall to be exact. I don’t think that is an insanely off the charts kind of tall, but still much taller than the average girl. Actually, very seldom have I met another woman close to my height. Being so vertically blessed makes your world more of a challenge at times too. For one thing, everything is made for short people. Not even average height, but short. Everything from the counters and sinks in your own home to those out in public, grocery carts, baby strollers, (often) shower heads, and most kinds of hanging things (I have run into advertising crap hanging in stores many times.). I understand that I’m taller than the average girl (why be average when I can be above average, anyway?) so it isn’t worth anyone’s while to cater to me as a minority, but isn’t the average height for men about six feet tall?? So, why continue to make everything so short?

The biggest complaint for me is clothing. My sister somehow ended up short (she’s 5′3), and can find the cutest clothes everywhere. It is really sickening. I have had to be content with ill-fitting garments that usually don’t quite come to the ends of my wrists and feet. And to top it off, clothing manufacturers seem to have this belief that because you’re tall you must be built like a linebacker. Hello? I’m the same size as everyone else - just longer.(Glad I got that out of my system.)

Having said that, things are getting better. The style now of longer length tops works great for me (at least for tank tops and t-shirts) and wearing shorts, capris, and skirts is usually a non-issue too. Dresses are hit or miss (the waists can get weird). The biggest issues for me are long sleeved shirts, jackets, and jeans/pants. With jeans the most important (to me). That is getting a little better too with the style of longer length inseams so girls can walk on the hems (what is that about?!). I suppose as more and more taller females are born there will be ever more options as well. Who knows? Maybe one day I will even be considered average sized, or (gasp!) short. Or, maybe not.

Here are some links that may be of use to those vertically blessed:

Shopping Taller - links to retailers offering tall friendly clothing

Joerg’s tall women site - has some great links on the clothing pages

Andi Fashion - more links

Tall Girl - a blog about being tall

Don’t harrass the tall girl - another tall blog

Tall Clubs International - celebrate your tallness with like-minded (and bodied) folks

Tall tips for teens

Tall People - a forum for tall folks

An article written in 1904 regarding tall girls with a great quote : “A daughter of the gods, divinely tall.”.

I’ve also run across quite a few fetishist tall girl sites, but I’ll spare you the links. Personally, I find them weird. If you’re interested you can find them easily enough yourself.
